Upland Lookout

Modern Lake Cottage

Upland Lookout is a contemporary cottage retreat nestled on the shores of a quiet inland lake. The simple wedge form creates a minimalist yet striking silhouette, while dark wood and corrugated metal siding blend seamlessly with the surrounding wooded backdrop. A detached garage and elongated entry bridge enhance the sense of arrival, setting the tone for a secluded lakeside escape. Large windows frame views of the lake and surrounding trees, bringing natural light deep into the interior. Inside, an open floor plan emphasizes spaciousness and flow, with natural materials and finishes throughout that echo the surrounding landscape.

A Slower Sense of Arrival

The approach to the home is intentionally stretched out, using the detached garage and entry bridge to create a quiet pause before reaching the main cottage. This sequence turns arrival into part of the daily living experience rather than a purely functional moment. Moving from the drive, to the garage, to the bridge helps the house feel more removed from the road and more connected to the wooded lakefront setting. It also gives the natural landscape a larger role in shaping how the home is first encountered. Instead of presenting the cottage all at once, the design lets the experience unfold gradually.

This approach gives the cottage a more quiet presence on the site and helps preserve the feeling of being tucked into the surrounding landscape. It also allows the main house to sit more lightly at the lakefront, without making arrival feel too immediate or exposed. The result is a simple site strategy that supports both privacy and connection.

Material Approach

The material palette was kept simple to help the cottage feel both contemporary and grounded in its wooded lakefront setting. The dark stained wood siding gives the home a more subtle presence among the trees, while corrugated metal adds durability and texture. Inside, warmer natural finishes soften those more durable exterior materials. The result is a material approach that feels clean and modern, while also seeming to have always been there.
