Mutiny Bay transforms an original 1970’s cottage into a modern island getaway for a large, multigenerational family. Located directly along the pristine Whidbey Island shoreline, the expansion and renovation project reimagines the cramped, outdated structure through both new and expanded spaces. The building form and massing take cues from the original cottage, creating a familiar, yet distinct beach presence. Clad in durable, contemporary materials, with large-scale window and door openings, the home is built to withstand the variable weather and western exposure, while also strengthening its ties to the beach and water beyond.
A Natural Evolution
“We wanted the renovation to feel like a continuation of the original beach house. By opening the center of the home, adding height, and bringing more daylight into the interior, we were able to make the house work better for the family while keeping its beach-house character intact.”
Brian Palmberg, Principal
