County Bridge

Northern Michigan Retreat

Sitting near the crest of a rolling landscape, County Bridge is a contemporary extension of simple vernacular structures of the past. The design leverages the natural topography to bring ample daylight throughout both levels. A central glass element highlights distant views and bridges the bookends of the simple gable form. Drawing from surrounding grass fields, the house is clad in vertical weathered cedar, aiming to both blend and stand out. The entry is marked with a steel and wood walking bridge that spans the slope and leads to an open vaulted living area, extending outward to an overhanging deck that serves as a sunset viewing platform.

Landscape Arrival

The house is positioned to take advantage of the site’s natural grade, using the slope to organize both arrival and daily living. The entry bridge connects the approach side of the property to the main level of the home, creating a transition from the landscape into the open vaulted living spaces. By spanning the grade rather than flattening it, the design keeps the hillside present in the experience of the house.

Shaped By the Land

“We saw the terrain as something that could shape the house, not just something to build around. The bridge allowed us to connect the high side of the site to the main living space, while the lower level tucks into the slope below. That relationship helped bring daylight into both levels and gave the home a stronger connection to the land.”
