Cattle Point

San Juan Islands Retreat

Located on a south-facing San Juan Island site at Cattle Point, this home connects the rolling hills of the landscape to expansive water views beyond. The primary home sits apart from a detached garage, linked by a trellis-covered breezeway that emphasizes a sense of arrival and remoteness. With sweeping views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the arrangement provides water views from all primary living and bedroom spaces. Large roof overhangs provide covered outdoor areas for year-round use, while a geothermal system and rooftop solar panels allow the home to operate efficiently and remain largely energy independent.

San Juan Island Living

Originally planned as a part-time, vacation retreat, the project evolved into a full-time residence during the design process. With careful planning, we were able to preserve the cottage scale and feel while still providing all the core accommodations needed for year round San Juan Island living.

Outdoor Living

“One of the things that drove the design was the need for protected outdoor space on both ends of the house. With wind directions shifting both seasonally and daily, it created an opportunity for a simple vaulted roof form bookended by outdoor living spaces.”
