HILLSIDE BRIDGE

Contemporary Vernacular

Gently placed near the crest of a rolling landscape, the Hillside Bridge house serves as a contemporary extension of the simple and iconic, vernacular structures of the past. Preserving the natural topography of the site, the design leverages the gradual native slopes to bring ample daylight throughout both levels, while also connecting to dramatic distant vistas through a central glass element that bridges the bookends of the simple gable form. Drawing from the tall surrounding grass fields, the house is clad throughout in an articulated, vertical cedar in a natural finish - aiming to both blend and shine. The entry is marked with a steel and wood walking bridge which spans over the slope, and leads to an open and vaulted living area. This living area extends outward to a cantilevered deck that serves as the perfect sunset viewing platform.
